On Saturday, January 17th, thirty KHS art students competed in the District round of the 2017 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo School Art contest. Five of our students were recognized, earning one Best of Show award, one Gold Medal award, and three Finalists who each earned an Award of Excellence.
On Saturday, March 11th, we found out at the HLS&R School Art awards program that KHS junior Kyra O. has been awarded a scholarship to attend the prestigious Western Art Academy. The WAA is a four-week summer program held on the campus of Schreiner University in Kerrville, TX. There she will benefit from in-depth instruction from master artists in the areas of oil painting and sculpture. The scholarship covers the cost of the WAA tuition fees, art materials, housing and food during her stay there.
To put this win in perspective for you, Kyra is one of only 48 students from across the state of Texas who has received this honor this year from the HLS&R. The HLS&R School Art program receives more than 300,000 entries each year, from which they select about 600 Finalists, Gold Medal, and Best of Show winners. From that 600, they select 60-70 students to apply and interview for positions at the WAA. Simply being invited to interview was an enormous achievement for Kyra. Winning the scholarship puts her in an even more elite group.
Kyra's WAA scholarship signifies the fourth time in four years that a KHS student has been awarded a scholarship by the HLS&R School Art program. She will be the third KHS student in as many years to attend the Western Art Academy. When you see her, please congratulate Kyra on her win and thank her for her role in continuing KHS's four year winning streak with this competition.
