Course Descriptions
Principles of Health Science   Grade Level: 9-10
Prerequisites: None / Career Portals to Health Science Preferred Credit: .5-1
Course Description:  This course gives an overview of the therapeutic, diagnostic, environmental, and informational systems of the health care industry.  Through the use of media, labs, bookwork, and presentations, these students will learn to reason think critically, make decisions, solve problems and communicated effectively.   The course is designed to develop specific knowledge and skills in the area of health care. The focus will include career exploration, medical terminology, ethical and legal issues/responsibilities, client and patient care, safety, first aid, and CPR. This class will also be an introduction to anatomy and physiology. Students will develop a concept of health and wellness from the perspective of a consumer as well as potential professional in the health care industry.
Students will be taught desired qualities of Health care personnel, ethical and legal responsibilities.  Students will be expected to employ those characteristics as they participate in this class and as they continue throughout the Health Science Technology program. 

  

Mecical Terminology Grade Level: 10-12
Prerequisite: Principles of Health Science  Credit: .5-1
Course Description: This course is designed to introduce students to the structure of medical terms, including prefixes, suffixes, word roots, combining forms, and singular and plural forms, plus medical abbreviations and acronyms. The course allows students to achieve comprehension of medical vocabulary appropriate to medical procedures, human anatomy and physiology, and pathophysiology.
Students will also have a focus on the careers available in Health Informatics.

 

Health Science: Certified Nurse Aide Grade Level: 11
Prerequisite: Principles, Med Term (Application Process Involved) Credit: 2
Course Description:  This course is designed to provide for the development of advanced knowledge and skills related to a wide variety of health careers with a specialized focus on the Career of Certified Nurse Aide.  Students career preparation and learning experience will consist of lecture, lab, and clinical experiences.  At the end of this class students will sit for the State of Texas Certification exam which consist of a written and Hands on Skills exam. 
This class is a two period class.   This class does have some cost involvement for scrubs, patches, equipment use fees and possible State Testing Fees.  Clinical sites and times vary each year due to availability.

 

Health Science: Pharmacology Grade Level: 11
Prerequisite: Principles, Med Term (Application Process Involved) Credit: 1
Course Description:  This course is designed to help students develop advanced knowledge and skills related to a wide variety of health careers, with a specialized focus on Pharmacology.  Students will have hands-on experiences for continued knowledge and skill development through lab experiences, community clinical rotations and career preparation learning.   This class is a prerequisite for the Pharm Tech Program.
This class does have some cost involvement for scrubs, program patches, equipment use fees, Fingerprinting, and TSBP Technician in Training Licensing Fee.  The clinical for this class occurs during the spring semester. Clinical sites and times vary each year due to availability.   

 

Health Science Practicum:   Pharm Tech Grade Level: 12
Prerequisites Principles, Med Term, Health Science Pharmacology Credit: 2-3
Course Description: This course is designed to give students practical application of previously studied knowledge and skills.  Students will apply this knowledge and skills in healthcare locations appropriate to the nature and level of their experiences.   In this course students wishing to work in a Pharmacy will use their knowledge and skills obtained during their previous Health Science course focusing on Pharmacology to further their scope of practice in the pharmacy settings available to them, as well as the hospital setting. 

This class is a two period class.  The clinical for this class occurs during the spring semester. Clinical sites and times vary each year due to availability.     Students may be required to gain Practicum hours on their own time. 

This class does have some cost involvement. Official TSBP License and Finger Printing (occurs after testing). Possible state testing fees.
